But for bioethicist Maurizio Mori, president of the Italian Society for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence, these discussions are closely reminiscent of those that developed in the past about perception of pain in animals—or even infamous racist ideas about pain perception in humans. Many technical experts in the AI field have criticized Lemoine’s statements and questioned their scientific correctness. It did not take long for the accuracy of such sensationalist reporting to be called into question, and the indecipherability of this emergent language shown to be relative. Nevertheless, it is interesting to note the anxiety that is provoked when linguistic machines exhibit unexpected behavior, and their communication becomes opaque to humans. For example, if a large fund begins to buy certain securities their value will increase, and an algorithm that can spot this behavior as the value is just beginning to rise can buy up the same stocks and sell them a short time later at a slightly higher price. Hence the algorithm’s task is to make sense out of the noisy datascape of the market. Conversely, the large funds try to stop their activities being detected and exploited in this way—introducing their own algorithms in order to disguise their behavior, for example by staggering the buying/selling by varying intervals—thus introducing latency into the system.
Researchers examined whether the machine learning algorithms were choosing to translate human-language sentences into a kind of “interlingua”, and found that the AI was indeed encoding semantics within its structures. The researchers cited this as evidence that a new interlingua, evolved from the natural languages, exists within the network. In an effort to make them more useful, Facebook’s Artificial Intelligence Research Group wanted to see if they could teach these sorts of chatbots to negotiate. AI programs with such negotiation abilities would potentially be able to sort out scheduling conflicts, negotiate with several travel agents to find the lowest price, arrange appointments with clients, and perform many other complex tasks. But these are the conversations we should actively be having because sex tech is here, and whether we like it or not, sex robots are likely to increasingly be normalized in our culture.

We know how to pick up on these cues from experience, but machines need to be taught the basics from scratch. Natural language will play an important role, but it’s only one part of a greater whole.

And absent the ability to provide a refund, there will be downstream ill-will and reputation damage.
